Mineralisation Potential Mapping in Parts of the Western Nigerian Basement Complex Using Airborne Magnetic Data

Abstract
Mineralisation associated with hydrothermal alteration and structural controls is a defining characteristic of orogenic belts, particularly within Basement Complex terrains. Despite the mineral wealth of the Southwestern Nigerian Basement Complex, large portions remain underexplored. This study applies advanced processing of airborne magnetic datasets to selected parts of the region, with the objective of delineating structural patterns and alteration zones indicative of mineralisation. Potential-field enhancement techniques, including the total horizontal derivative (THD), first vertical derivative (FVD), Centre for Exploration Targeting Grid Analysis (CETGRA), analytic signal, and source parameter imaging (SPI), were employed to identify prospective targets. The analytic signal highlights magnetisation intensity variations, with amplitudes above 0.307 nT/m marking potential mineralised zones, showing close agreement with anomalies delineated by THD, FVD, and CETGRA. CETGRA further reveals dominant structural trends oriented WNW–ESE and NE–SW, orientations that align with recognised mineralisation corridors. Areas characterised by dense lineament networks coincide spatially with zones of elevated magnetic intensity and high-frequency responses on the analytic signal, THD, and FVD maps, underscoring the structural control on mineralisation. These structures are interpreted as conduits for hydrothermal fluid migration and sites of metal concentration. Shallow anomalies (<66 m), identified through SPI, correspond strongly with high-amplitude features and dense lineament zones. The convergence of shallow SPI anomalies, elevated magnetic responses, and lineament concentrations provides robust evidence of priority exploration targets within the study area.
